This is your Captain Speaking…Quietly

Aside from rehearsing deliberative facial expressions, spending exorbitant amounts of cash on new guitar effects pedals and convincing young visual artists to prepare continuous film sequences for your live performances, perhaps the most daunting task for post-rock bands the underlying imperative to fashion something new and original out of what has become (unfortunately) a tired and predictable genre.

Weathered
from Storyboard
No longer available

This is Your Captain Speaking come closer than most to breaking free of the indistinguishable late ‘90s Constellation/Kranky mould of post-rock, but their latest offering, Storyboard, never quite reaches the point of innovation. Recorded in Fitzroy Primary School library (I tried a similar thing at Melbourne Uni’s Baillieu Library once, but the librarians and students were justifiably inhospitable), Storyboard is a bold, intricate and consistent work of classic post-rock. It steers clear of the patented “soft-loud-soft-loud-soft” post-rock formula (sorry to harp on about that again) and while it is often progressive and repetitive, it is rarely boring or meandering or boring.

Weathered” stands out amongst the pack.
